UEFA: CR7 to Receive Special Award Today

Cristiano Ronaldo would receive an award for being the all-time top scorer in the Champions League at the UEFA draw ceremony on Thursday, August 29.


The former Real Madrid forward has become more synonymous with the Champions League than any other player in his time.


Ronaldo would be honorued for his legacy in Europe’s elite competition.


For the first time since 1992, UEFA have reportedly changed the Champions League format ahead of the upcoming 2024/25 campaign, with a line up of 36 teams instead of 32 teams set to participate.


UEFA president, Aleksander Ceferin, spoke on the format, saying: "We are convinced that the format chosen, strikes the right balance and that it will improve the competitive balance and generate solid revenues that can be distributed to clubs, leagues and into grassroots football across our continent while increasing the appeal and popularity of our club competitions”.


The Portuguese player who has a record of 17 goals in a single Champions League campaign is more than anyone else has ever achieved, and his 67 total strikes in the group stage of the tournament is more than anyone else.


The superstar striker had enjoyed two separate spells with Manchester United, scoring 22 of his 140 goals in the competition for the Reds.


Reports say that Aleksander Ceferin, the UEFA president, will be presenting the Al-Nassr star with the award at the Grimaldi Forum in Monaco, in recognition of his extraordinary efforts over the years.


Ceferin in an interview said: "Cristiano Ronaldo is one of the brightest stars in the UEFA Champions League constellation.


"His extraordinary goalscoring achievements in the competition seem destined to stand the test of time, posing a remarkable challenge for future generations to surpass.


"His sustained excellence at the highest level is a testament to his relentless pursuit of both team and individual honors. Over more than two decades, he has continuously evolved and refined his game, while preserving a youthful passion for scoring and celebrating goals.


"His professionalism, work ethic, dedication and ability to shine on the grandest stage are qualities that football players everywhere should aspire to emulate."


On the scoring chart, Lionel Messi came second, with 129 goals, and current Barcelona forward, Robert Lewandowski sits third on 94.


Still on the scoring chart, Wayne Rooney, Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes are next in the standings.


The 39-year-old scored a free-kick against Al-Feiha in the Saudi Pro League on Wednesday, the 899th goal of his incredible career.


According to reports, Ronaldo’s has been named greatest Champions League player of all time.


From Manchester United to Real Madrid to Juventus, the Portuguese superstar has always risen to the occasion whenever he featured in the competitions.
