The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has officially commenced the placement and payment of 10,000 beneficiaries under its Youth Internship Scheme, a one-year practical skills training initiative aimed at fostering sustainable youth empowerment across the Niger Delta region.
This was disclosed on Thursday by Seledi Thompson-Wakama , NDDC Director, Corporate Affairs in a statement posted via Facebook.
The statement noted that with the successful completion of the selection process, beneficiaries are now being placed in various organisations to gain hands-on experience relevant to their skills and career aspirations.
Concurrently, the payment of monthly stipends has also begun, ensuring that participants receive the necessary financial support as they embark on this transformative journey.
According to the statement, The selection process was conducted with the highest level of transparency, diligence, and fairness. Out of an overwhelming 3.2 million applications received during the registration period, 10,000 outstanding young individuals were carefully chosen.
This remarkable response emphasised the vast potential, enthusiasm, and aspirations of the youth in the region.
Also, recognizing the need for a structured and data-driven approach to youth development, the NDDC has established a comprehensive digital repository of critical information.
This repository includes details on the qualifications, skills, interests, employment status, and professional aspirations of young people in the region.
By leveraging this database, the Commission can design and implement more targeted programmes that effectively address the unique challenges and opportunities facing the Niger Delta’s youth.
To reinforce its commitment to transparency, accountability, and corporate governance, the NDDC partnered with KPMG, a globally respected consultancy firm.
Furthermore, through this collaboration, a Governance Advisory Report has been developed to guide the Commission’s strategic transition from a transactional to a transformational governance model. This shift aligns with the Commission’s broader vision of fostering long-term, sustainable development in the Niger Delta.
The statement also revealed the NDDC committment to continuous engagement with key stakeholders, including youth organizations, community leaders, and development partners. Adding that the collaborations are essential in shaping a future that reflects the aspirations of the region’s young people.
The Commission in addition extends its sincere gratitude to all Niger Delta stakeholders, particularly the applicants of the Youth Internship Scheme, for their patience, support, and trust throughout the rigorous selection process.
