Imo Police Begin Orderly Room Trial Of Four Officers

Authorities of the Imo State Police Command have commenced the ordeal room trial of four of their officers.

The police officers undergoing the trial are Inspector Ibrahim Nainna, Inspector Unaka Maxvirgin, Inspector Miller Ibinitta and Sergeant Anthony Alozie.

The Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, in the state ASP Henry Okoye disclosed this in a statement on Friday, October 18, 2024.

ASP Okoye said the police officers were caught in a viral video allegedly extorting money from motorists in Owerri, the Imo State capital.

The police spokesman further disclosed that the police officers have been in detention since the video went into circulation.

The PPRO said results of the proceedings will be communicated in due course to the public.

Meanwhile, the state Commissioner of Police, CP Aboki Danjuma, and his management team have embarked on inspection across various police divisions and tactical teams in the state.

ASP Okoye said the initiative aims at assessing the conditions of suspects in detention and ensuring that no individual is held beyond the legal limits.

“This move reflects a commitment to upholding the rights of detainees and improving overall police accountability”, he added.

Recall that cases of extortion of motorists and youths by security personnel at checkpoints dotting expressways and streets especially in the South East region of the country are reported daily.

The motorists ‘pay’ between N100 and N500 per checkpoint with the officers giving them ‘change’ whenever a high denomination of the currency is given by motorists and youths.

At checkpoints manned by soldiers, a civilian boy is usually the one that collects the money which has acquired several baptismal names like roger, egunje and tip.

Security agents in Imo State also do not look kindly to any well-dressed youth driving a posh car.

They would quickly brand him either a yahoo-yahoo (advance-fee) practitioner or a member of the separatist Indigenous People of Biafra (IPoB) in a bid to fleece him of money.  The security personnel are reported to sometimes carry PoS machines with which the youths transfer huge sums of money to them.

A livid National Youth Alliance (NYA) led by Theodore Chinonso Ubah popularly known as Nonsonkwa last week issued a seven-day ultimatum to security personnel within which to discontinue extortion in Imo State or contend with a three-day protest rally that will rock the state.
