16 Burnt  as Bus, Truck Collide on Ore-Benin expressway

About 16 people were confirmed burnt to death while three sustained wounds in a deadly road accident which occurred on the Ondo-Ore Expressway at Ajure community in Odigbo Local Government Area of Ondo State on Tuesday night.


It was gathered that the auto crash, which burnt the victims beyond recognition, involved an 18-passenger Totota Hiace bus and a truck.


The two vehicles as learnt were said to have had a head-on collision leading to the bus catching fire and burning 16 of its occupants.


However, three people were said to have survived the crash.


Ibitoye Samuel, the Ondo Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps confirmed the incident on Wednesday to news men.

Samuel said the accident was caused by over speeding and wrongful overtaking by the vehicles involved. He added that the rescue operation ended at about 11 pm.


“The accident happened at 8pm on Monday night and the rescue operation ended at 11pm,” Ibitoye said.

“The accident involved a Toyota Hiace and a truck, with two other passengers who escaped the tragedy.

“Preliminary investigation revealed the cause of the incident to over speeding and wrongful overtaking which unfortunately led to a head-on collision.


Varying degrees of road accidents occur almost constantly on the expressways. Despite measures put in place by the Road Safety operatives and other officials, unfortunate occurrences still happen on many major roads.

Last week Four persons were confirmed dead while two others sustained injuries in an accident that occurred in the Enugada area of Lafenwa, Abeokuta, Ogun State on Thursday.


The spokesperson for the state Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, Babatunde Akinbiyi, confirmed in a statement the incident, he had disclosed that rescue efforts were ongoing.


The Punch reported that the truck, suspected to have lost control, rammed into a vehicle, a commercial motorcycle and some pedestrians by the side of the road.

A source told the Media outfit that the truck lost control and rammed into a vehicle and a motorcycle, including some pedestrians who were walking by the roadside which left about six people lifeless.


A video of the accident scene showed the lifeless and mutilated bodies of some of the victims and sympathisers weeping in the background.
