Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca reflected on his team's performance after their tense 2-1 victory over Brentford on Sunday, stressing the need for improvement in managing high-pressure situations. Despite securing a fifth consecutive win in the Premier League, which moved them to within two points of league leaders Liverpool, the match ended on a somewhat sour note, with Marc Cucurella receiving a red card in stoppage time.
The victory was hard-fought, with goals from Cucurella and Nicolas Jackson giving Chelsea a crucial lead, but the team almost let it slip away. In the final moments of the match, Chelsea conceded a goal to Brentford, and Cucurella was shown a second yellow card after a heated exchange with forward Kevin Schade, resulting in his dismissal. Chelsea's disciplinary record this season has been a concern, as they currently lead the Premier League in yellow cards, with 50 accumulated thus far.
Maresca acknowledged the need for Chelsea to better control the closing stages of games, noting that such incidents reflect a lack of experience in handling stressful moments. "The goal we conceded and the final phase of the game are aspects we need to manage more effectively," Maresca said. "It’s all about learning and improving, and it's a part of our development."
He added, "The aggressive nature of the second yellow card is something we can avoid. These are moments we must learn from, especially in terms of controlling our emotions on the pitch."
Despite the late drama, Maresca was full of praise for Cucurella’s overall performance. The Spanish full-back played a crucial role in both attacking and defending, contributing to the team's solid performance. "Marc was exceptional, both with and without the ball," Maresca said. "Along with the rest of the team, he was outstanding, and we're delighted with his contribution."
The manager also provided updates on the squad ahead of upcoming fixtures. Midfielder Romeo Lavia is set to return from injury for Chelsea’s next Premier League match, a trip to Everton next Sunday, while Joao Felix will be available for their upcoming Conference League match against Shamrock Rovers on Thursday. However, Maresca confirmed that defender Benoit Badiashile is likely to miss the next few games due to an injury sustained in training.
Looking ahead, Maresca emphasized the importance of building on Chelsea's recent winning streak but also underlined the need to address the team's disciplinary issues and refine their game management. With the Premier League title race heating up, Chelsea will need to avoid costly mistakes in the final moments of matches if they are to keep pace with the top teams.
