The Police Command in Ogun State said a 32-year-old man identified as Olúwaṣeun Shorinola, reportedly committed suicide in the Kémta area of Abeokuta, the state capital.
This was confirmed to The Punch on Thursday, 29 August, 2024 by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, who said the incident happened around 10pm on Wednesday.
According to the police spokesperson Shorinola's wife discovered him hanging from a wall in his Abeokuta home.
Odutola narrated that on August 28, 2024, Temitope Oguntade reported to the Kémta Police Division that she had received a call from Tajudeen Aremu, informing her that her brother had been found dead by his wife.
“A police team was dispatched to the scene, where they found Shorinola deceased, hanging from a wall, indicating a suicide. The body was removed from the hanging position.
“The family requested to take the body for burial rather than having it sent to the mortuary for an autopsy. The police are currently monitoring the situation,” Odutola said.
In a related development, the police operatives arrested a 30-year-old man identified as Chinonso Nwaebonyi for allegedly defiling a seven-year-old girl in Awka, Anambra State capital.
The man as gathered is a native of Izzi community in Ebonyi State. He was detained after the mother of the seven-year-old reported the incident to the Anambra State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare in Awka.
Chidimma Ikeanyionwu, media aide to Ify Obinabo, commissioner, for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday, 29 August, 2024 stating tthat the suspect, on interrogation by security operatives, had earlier denied the allegation, but later confessed to committing the said crime but “only once”.
The statement read in part, “According to the seven-year-old, she, with her twin brother usually go to the compound after theirs to play since the holiday started. It was at the place that the suspect started defiling her.
“She stated that the suspect had had carnal knowledge of her for about five times which was always on Mondays and Tuesdays.
“On how the mother got to know of the incident, the seven-year-old’s mother said she got to know one of the days she came back from work to bathe her kids and discovered that her daughter’s private region was swollen.
