Experts Formulate Policies For Bayelsa Blue Economy Sector

A four-day strategic meeting aimed at drafting a comprehensive and holistic policy framework for the Marine and Blue Economy sector of Bayelsa has ended in the state capital Yenagoa. 


The technical working session, which was organized by the state government, was spearheaded by the newly created Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy.


The event brought together experts and critical stakeholders in the sector to deliberate on the development of a robust policy that will guide the Ministry's operations. 


The State Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, while delivering a keynote address, said the meeting was timely as it will enhance the policy direction of the ministry.


The Deputy Governor, who was represented by his Chief of Staff, Gowon Toruyouyei at the opening ceremony, emphasized the strategic importance of the Marine and Blue Economy sector to the development of the state.


He encouraged participants to collaborate effectively and bring their expertise to bear on drafting a policy that would transform the sector and the state at large. 


In her remarks, the Commissioner for Marine and Blue Economy, Dr. Faith Izibenua Zibs-Godwin, expressed gratitude to participants and stakeholders for their contributions to the development of a policy draft that will guide the Ministry's operations. 


"This policy framework will unlock Bayelsa's marine and blue economy potentials, drive economic growth, improve lives, and ensure effective collaborations with relevant agencies for optimal productivity," she said.


The Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Nimibofa Ayawei, and the Chief of Staff to the Government, Pastor Peter Akpe, in their separate remarks, commended the commissioner for putting the technical session together.


They called for more deliberate efforts to implement the policies formulated and also appreciated the committee for their resilience in formulating the right policy to harness the rich Marine and Blue Economy potentials of the state.  


Our correspondent reports that the meeting which took place from September 2-5, 2024, at the Doncont Hotels and Apartments, Baybridge, Yenagoa, focused on addressing gaps and challenges within the marine and blue economy sector and advancing effective policy development.


The highlight of the event was the formulation of a draft policy document that will guide the state maritime operations in collaboration with the relevant agencies in the Marine and Blue Economy sector.
