The Enugu State Ministry of Health has confirmed the death of 10 individuals following a cholera outbreak in the state.
In an official letter recently to the Guild of Medical Directors, Dr. Egwuonwu Samuel, Director of Medical Services, conveyed the news on behalf of the state’s Commissioner for Health, Prof. Emmanuel Obi today. The ministry is raising the alarm and urging immediate action to curb the spread of the disease.
Dr. Egwuonwu revealed that several cholera cases have been reported, leading to 10 fatalities so far. The State Ministry of Health, in collaboration with its partners, has initiated efforts to contain the outbreak and prevent further loss of life.
“Healthcare facilities and personnel are advised to remain vigilant for patients exhibiting symptoms such as acute diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and vomiting," he stated.
He also emphasized the urgent need for heightened Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) measures across medical establishments to halt the spread of cholera. Medical practitioners have been urged to intensify precautions and report suspected cases immediately.
The ministry highlighted that cholera is a highly contagious disease, typically spread through contaminated food or water.
Egwuonwu stressed that the swift response of health authorities is crucial in limiting the impact of the outbreak and safeguarding the population.
He appealed to the public to adopt strict hygiene practices, including boiling water before drinking, frequent hand washing, and avoiding poorly handled food. He noted that the state government is expected to release further updates and guidelines as the situation evolves, with ongoing efforts to manage the outbreak in collaboration with both local and international health partners.
