Abia First Lady Laments High Rate of Preventable Eye Problems in Children

The Wife of Abia State Governor, Mrs. Chidinma Priscilla Otti has stated that many children in rural Abia communities are facing preventable vision problems.

Mrs. Otti made this statement on Thursday during the 2024 World Sight Day event, themed "Love Your Eyes, Kids as she highlighted that many children in Abia suffer from preventable vision problems that frequently go undiagnosed or untreated, particularly in rural areas.

She mentioned that the lack of awareness and access to proper eye care can significantly impact children's development and quality of life, making it essential to address these challenges to ensure every child has the opportunity for healthy vision and a brighter future.

She emphasized, “Our eyes are a window to the world's beauty and a gateway to knowledge and opportunity. They connect us to loved ones and our cherished dreams. However, many children in Abia State face preventable vision challenges, often undiagnosed or untreated, especially in rural areas. This is not the reality they deserve.”

"As a mother dedicated to the well-being of our children, I believe walking is essential for our overall health, including our eye health. It boosts blood circulation, helping to lower the risk of eye conditions and maintain clear vision. By enjoying the fresh air and staying active, we are also investing in a healthier future for our bodies and our sight.

“We must move swiftly and with purpose. By making eye health a priority, we can ensure that every child in Abia State, regardless of where they live, has access to proper care. This starts with regular eve screenings, accessible eye clinics, and programs that exteng to every cornef of our communities”, she added.

She praised Governor Alex Otti for his steadfast commitment to enhancing eye health in Abia State, noting that in collaboration with the Abia State Eye Health Management Bureau, the government is making significant progress in expanding eye care outreach.

Mrs Otti stated, "We are training more healthcare workers, establishing new eye clinics, and striving to lower the costs of eye treatments. These initiatives aim to ensure that no child is left behind due to vision impairment.

“The journey towards better eye health begins with education. We are working to empower families, schools, and communities with the knowledge they need to take action. Early detection is key.

“By catching issues early, we can prevent long-term damage, giving our children the opportunity to thrive. I urge you all to make your children’s eye health a top priority. Take them to the clinics for regular eye check-ups, raise awareness in your communities, and advocate for improved eye care services. Investing in the vision of our children is investing in their future, and the future of Abia State."
