The Nigeria Labour Congress has expressed sadness over the sudden demise of Nigerian workers that were involved in the the Eastwind Aviation helicopter crash on October 24, 2024, in Rivers State.
This is according to a statement released today, Saturday, the 26th of October, 2024, which was signed by the NLC National President, Joe Ajaero.
The tragic incident claimed the lives of eight dedicated and Committed Nigerian workers while on duty, on their way to FPSO NUIM ANTAN off the coast of Calabar from Port Harcourt.
“As these workers ventured forth in service to our nation, they encountered fate’s cruel blow, reminding us once again of the sacrifices Nigerian workers make daily to build a Nigeria that caters to all”, Ajaero stated.
The NLC national president, described the incident as heartbreaking pointing out the difficult conditions workers often face in the country.
He stressed on the need for urgent and absolute attention to be given to workers’ health and safety towards ensuring that Nigerian workers in any sector do not risk their lives each day to contribute to national development.
In his statement he said: "No worker should face death or injury as a consequence of simply doing their job. We implore the Government and all authorities tasked with Occupational Safety and Health to redouble their efforts to guarantee that workplaces and all avenues to and from work are made as safe as possible”.
He further mentioned that the tragedy also heightens their concerns about the lax enforcement of safety standards, especially in high-risk sectors such as the offshore oil and gas industry, where the stakes are on the high side.
According to the statement, NLC demands that the Federal Government, through all pertinent agencies, should carry conduct a thorough investigation into the causes of this crash.
He also added that, only through a comprehensive inquiry can an uncover the lessons necessary to prevent such tragedies in the future and ensure that Nigerian workers are better protected..
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues of those lost, especially our affiliates, the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers and the National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers, who have lost esteemed members in this tragic accident. We pray for strength and comfort for those grieving and for the entire nation, deeply affected by this profound loss,’'
