Abia Govt Calls on Residents to Prioritize Waste Management

The Abia State Government is encouraging residents to take responsibility for their surroundings by prioritizing waste management and environmental cleanliness, as simple actions like proper disposal and regular clean-ups can significantly contribute to a healthier, more sustainable community for all.

In a statement on Friday, Ogbonnia Okereke, General Manager and Chief Executive of the Abia State Protection Agency (ASEPA), remarked that as Abia State joins the global community in commemorating World Clean-Up Day on September 20, stating that, this occasion highlights the significant progress made under the leadership of Governor Alex Otti, as the state embarks on a sustainable path toward better environmental cleanliness and public health.

He noted that this year’s World Clean-Up Day theme aligns seamlessly with Governor Otti’s administration's efforts to transform waste management in Abia State.

“The importance of a clean and healthy environment cannot be overstated, as it is key to the well-being of our citizens. Prior to this administration, the cities of Aba and Umuahia were notorious for being overrun by waste, an unsightly and dangerous situation that threatened the health of Ndi Abia", The statment highlighted.

“Recognizing the urgency of the waste crisis, Gov. Alex Otti swiftly declared a state of Emergency on Waste Management upon assuming office. A dedicated task force was immediately mobilized to tackle the backlog of waste that had accumulated over time. Within weeks, our major cities and towns were rid of the filth that once plagued them.

“Today, Abia State is not only cleaner but is also undergoing a complete transformation in its waste management system. The Abia State Environmental Protection Agency (ASEPA) has been revamped and reenergized, ensuring consistent sanitation efforts across the state. Our commitment is to ensure that Abia transitions into a model state for modern and sustainable waste management practices", He added.

He urged Abia residents to get involved in maintaining environmental cleanliness.

“In celebration of World Clean-Up Day, we call on all Ndi Abia to actively participate in keeping our environment clean. Every citizen has a role to play in this collective mission. Let us all come together to build a cleaner, healthier, and more prosperous Abia State”.

The ASEPA chief urged the public to use biodegradable materials for waste disposal and to refrain from dumping trash in unauthorized areas or drains, as this can cause flooding and environmental hazards. He also encouraged Abia residents to pay sanitation fees on time to support the essential services provided by ASEPA and to embrace the state’s recycling initiatives as part of the transition to modern waste management.

He mentioned that ASEPA is dedicated to prompt and efficient waste removal from collection points, homes, businesses, and markets.

"Our aim is to ensure a healthy and clean Abia for everyone.

“As part of our modern waste management strategy, Abia State has adopted the United Nations Zero Waste Agenda and the Circular Economy Model, aiming to transform waste into valuable resources like consumer goods, fertilizers, and energy.

"We are expanding beyond the traditional 3 Rs of waste management (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) to include 12 Rs, such as Refuse, Rethink, Repair, Refurbish, Remanufacture, and Repurpose. This holistic approach will help us view waste not as a challenge but as an opportunity for innovation and economic growth.” He emphasized.
