The National Examination Council (NECO) released the 2024 Senior School Certificate Examination results, showing Abia State leading with 83.40% of candidates achieving five credits or more, including Mathematics and English, while Katsina State came in last with just 2.42%.
The state also leads in candidates with five credits and above irrespective of Mathematics and English language with 95.84 percent.
Prof. Dantana Wushishi, NECO Registrar and Chief Executive Officer, announced the release of the results during a press conference at the Council’s Headquarters in Minna, Niger State.
Abia, Imo, and Ebonyi states ranked highest in performance, while Katsina, Kano, Jigawa, Borno, and Zamfara were the lowest performers." He mentioned.
He revealed that 1,147,597 candidates achieved five credits or more, excluding English Language and Mathematics, representing 83.90%, while those with special needs were 2,267. The distribution of candidates with special needs shows that 1,104 candidates experience hearing impairment, 348 have visual impairment, 342 are affected by albinism, 237 have autism, and 236 have low vision.
The registrar stated that, of the 1,376,423 candidates registered for the examination, only 1,367,736 actually sat for it, comprising 702,112 males and 665,624 females.
He noted that 8,437 candidates were involved in various forms of malpractice in 2024, a decrease from 12,030 in 2023, indicating a reduction of 30.1%.
Professor Wushishi also revealed that during the 2024 SSCE, 40 schools across 17 states were identified for mass cheating, while 21 supervisors were recommended for blacklisting due to poor supervision, aiding and abetting, abscondment, extortion, drunkenness, and negligence in 12 states.
He stated that a school in Ekiti State has been recommended for de-recognition due to widespread cheating in two core subjects and one science subject
He mentioned that the decision highlights serious concerns about academic integrity and the need for stricter oversight to ensure a fair learning environment for all students.
The Registrar also stated that the Council intends to invite the involved schools for discussions before imposing any sanctions, assuring that this approach aims to ensure fairness and allow the schools to address the issues prior to any decisions on potential penalties.

Last year, during the announcement of the 2023 SSCE results, Prof. Wushishi stated that Abia State had the highest percentage of candidates achieving five credits or more, including Mathematics and English, at 85.53%. Adamawa ranked second with 51.5%, while Kebbi State recorded the lowest performance at 0.310%."
