The Abia State Government has refuted reports claiming that Mr. Goodluck Ubochi, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, has resigned from his position.
Ferdinand Ekeoma, the Special Adviser to the Governor on media and publicity, issued a statement on Thursday declaring that the report was false, baseless, and unfounded. He accused one Ikechukwu Iroha of being behind the spread of the false news.
Ekeoma recently disclosed that leaked WhatsApp chat messages from a PDP group, obtained just a few days ago, revealed a scheme where former appointees of the previous PDP-led government, along with other individuals, were recruited to disseminate false information.
He mentioned that such act indicates a coordinated effort to spread misleading content, highlighting concerns about the integrity of information being circulated within the political sphere.
According to him, their goal was to discredit the Governor and his administration by using disinformation to create confusion, dissatisfaction, and instability.
Ekeoma also accused the group of disseminating false information attributed to Nigeria’s former Finance Minister and Director-General of the World Trade Organization, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala. Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala has denied the report and issued a stern warning, stating she would take serious action against those responsible for such false news.
In the statement, he quoted the Commissioner as saying “I was shocked and embarrassed by that report which is false. Even my wife has called me, and she was very embarrassed, but I told her it's false. The Speaker was the first that alerted me and lot of other persons have called me, but I told them the report was completely false"
He urged the general public to carefully scrutinize any news reports from the opposition, advising them to approach such information with a healthy dose of suspicion and caution. His message emphasized the importance of verifying the credibility of news sources and being wary of potential misinformation or biased reporting that could distort the truth.
