Abia LG Election: Labour Party Hold Parallel Primaries

The Labour Party (LP) in Abia State is facing a crisis ahead of the November local government election, with rival factions conducting parallel primary elections.

In an interview monitored in Umuahia on Monday, Ceekay Igara, a former state party chairman and head of the LG electoral committee, stated that his committee had conducted a primary election and was awaiting approval from the National Executive Committee for submission to the Abia State Independent Electoral Commission (ABSIEC).

At the same time, a different list of candidates who reportedly won a separate primary election, allegedly supported by the governor, is making rounds online. This information has sparked discussions and speculation as it circulates, drawing attention to the implications of political endorsements and the dynamics of the electoral landscape.

However, Igara maintains that his committee, reportedly established by the party’s national leadership, is the one tasked with overseeing the local government primary election.

He emphasized that the national leadership of the Labour Party supplied nomination forms, which his committee subsequently sold to aspiring candidates.

He raised concerns about the legitimacy of another faction's claims to have conducted a primary election, arguing that it is impossible for them to do so without the official nomination forms provided by the party. He suggested that any election they claim to hold may lack the necessary validation from the party’s official processes.

Igara emphasized that all nomination forms for the recent primaries came directly from the party’s national leadership, asserting that his committee has the full support of the LP national headquarters.

Igara expressed optimism that the Abia Electoral Commission will recognize the list of candidates who emerged victorious in the primary election held by his committee.

He also mentioned that he has no regrets about backing Dr. Alex Otti’s ascension as the governor, even amid the ongoing turmoil within the Labour Party in Abia State. Nonetheless, he highlighted the importance of the administration working closely with the party to foster peace and stability.

Recall, Mr. Emmanuel Otti, the Acting Labour Party state chairman, advised the public to ignore any announcements made by the party’s former chairman, Mr. Ceekay Igara, concerning the sale of nomination forms.
