Corps Members Receive N33,000 Against N77,000 Promised

Some Members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) have taken to social media, particularly X (formerly Twitter), to express their anger and disappointment after receiving alerts of N33,000 as their monthly allowance instead of the N77,000 previously announced by the Federal Government.

In a move that was expected to raise the morale and welfare of corps members, the Federal Government officially declared on September 25, 2024, that the monthly allowance for NYSC members would be increased to N77,000, with effect from July 2024. This adjustment was in line with the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024 and was welcomed with great enthusiasm by corps members across the country. However, the reality fell short of expectations.

On October 2, 2024, the internet was flooded with reactions as NYSC members expressed frustration over receiving the same old N33,000 allowance instead of the promised increase. Social media was ablaze with complaints, screenshots, and memes, as many accused the government of deceiving them.

One user, @Akureketical, lamented, "Federal Government, this is not our agreement o. You promised 77k." Another user, Kindwest, expressed frustration, stating, "APC is known for lies. So na 33k NYSC finally pay corpers? Let’s continue watching Big Brother and act like there’s no problem in this country."

The discontent was widespread. Miss Oluchi shared her disappointment: "They have started paying corps members. Guess how much? 33k. This government really thinks propaganda will save them." Similarly, @Ojoblessed1 reacted, "Las las na 33k baba still collect, na to use am carry 2 odds for sporty sha. Why are we seeing 33k? Or you want to send it twice?"

The frustration turned political for some, with @MDAfrica95 stating, "NYSC, believe in APC at your own peril. I told my friend last week that a typical politician like Tinubu, an incumbent president like him, can never make a good president because deception is part of his game. The incumbent president has duped all NYSC corps members."

Another corps member, @Marveljesse1, lamented, "Why on Earth will the Federal Government do this after saying they have increased the NYSC allowance to N77,000? Na 33k they come dey send today. Kai, this country self, na who do us? I don make my budget for this month finish oo, where I wan come start from now?"

Corps members across the country are left wondering whether the government will fulfill its promise or if the N77,000 was just another empty declaration
