The Abia State Police Command has provided clarification regarding the arrest of Ceekay Igara, the Labour Party’s National Vice Chairman for the South-East, which took place on Saturday.
They stated that he was invited for questioning due to a petition lodged by the party’s acting state chairman, who accused him of impersonation.
This information was shared in a statement issued to journalists on Sunday by ASP Maureen Chinaka, the Police Public Relations Officer for the command.
The statement indicated that Igara, along with three other individuals, was invited by the command due to allegations of conduct that could lead to a breach of peace, impersonation, and obtaining by false pretenses.
The statement reads: “The Abia State Police Command received a written petition from the Labour Party’s Acting State Chairman against Mr Ceekay Igara and three others for alleged impersonation, obtaining by false pretence, and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace.”
The statement also revealed that detectives from the command invited Igara for questioning, and he was released the same day after providing his statement. The investigation is still ongoing.
It added: “Yesterday, 19/10/2024, detectives from the Command invited Mr Igara to the Command Headquarters, took his statement, and released him the same day.
“Investigation is ongoing.”
Earlier, it was reported that the Labour Party leadership called for the release of its National Vice Chairman for the South-East, Mr. Ceekay Igara, who was allegedly arrested under the instructions of Abia Governor Dr. Alex Otti.
This demand was made in a statement released on Saturday in Abuja by the party’s Deputy National Chairman, Dr. Ayo Olorunfemi.
The Labour Party leadership is totally in shock over this development, particularly as it is coming on the orders of the party’s only state governor.
“The Labour Party is still at a loss over what may have caused some people who a few months ago stood by the party during our convention to suddenly turn and launch the worst offensive at the leadership.
“We are therefore demanding the immediate release of Comrade Ceekay Igara from the custody of the police or that he be charged to court within the next twenty-four hours, as specified by the law.”
