Abia Residents Accuse LP of Giving FG Palliatives To Members

Despite the state government's claim of fairly distributing Federal Government palliatives across all 17 local government areas in Abia State, residents are accusing the Labour Party of providing these resources exclusively to its members.

During a radio program called "Real Matters," on Flo Fm, callers voiced their frustration and demanded transparency and fairness in the distribution of these palliatives.

While urging Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti to closely supervise the distribution of palliatives, they argue that this unfair practice not only undermines the intended support for all citizens but also fosters divisions within the community.

Ikenna from Ututu stated "the palliative distribution occurred around March, but officials only handed out the rice to members of their party".

He argued that it was not given to the needy who truly deserved it.

Chi Chi from Ubakala reported a similar situation, alleging that some officials were selling the rice to villagers.

"some of the men that came to share the rice were selling the rice intended for villagers", she said.

She expressed concern that the aid meant for those in need was being misappropriated, highlighting the struggles of the community. She mentioned that this attitude not only undermines trust but also exacerbates the difficulties faced by those relying on this support.

Our correspondent further investigated and reported that most individuals and families in rural areas did not benefit from the rice distribution.

Mr. Ugochukwu Okwara stated, "We only hear things like this on the radio. They claim they've distributed it four times, but as you can see, I'm a poor man with three kids, and I haven't received a single grain of rice".

"You might want to ask others from Olokoro, I'm sure they'll tell you the same", he added.

Recall that the Abia State Government through the Special Adviser to Gov. Alex Otti on Policy and Intervention, Rev. Fr. Christian Anokwuru, claimed it maintained the highest standards of transparency in distributing Federal Government palliative materials to vulnerable and specially targeted beneficiaries.

Anokwuru reported that the state received 16,800 bags of 50 kg rice and 13,260 bags of 50 kg maize. He said that the maize was later exchanged with rice, bringing the quantity of rice received and distributed to 30,800 bags.

He also mentioned that the State Government also augmented the quantity with additional 4,800 bags.

He acknowledged that the state received four batches of Federal Government palliatives, with the fourth batch arriving around June.
