Abia State Embarks on Water and Sanitation Upgrade


In a bid to improve the health and well-being of Abians, the State government has approved the Abia Integrated Water Sanitation and Hygiene Accelerated Programme, a scheme that is geared towards providing clean and safe water for Abia populace.


The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, said in Umuahia that the Governor Alex Otti made approval for the Abia Integrated Water Sanitation and Hygiene Accelerated Programme, which includes, the upgrade of water facilities and water treatment within Abia communities.

Kanu said part of government's activities to prioritize the health of the people, is ensuring Abia populace, have access to clean and portable water supply, pointing out that, its absence can pose a great risk on the health of the people.


Speaking, the Commissioner for Power and Public Utilities, Mr Ikechukwu Monday, said the reason the state embarked on Abia Integrated Water Sanitation and Hygiene Accelerated Programme initiatives,is to address water supply issues, which are critical to public health.


According to Hon Ikechukwu Monday, the initiative conceived as a coordinated, three-phase program, would have existing boreholes, retrofitted with solar power systems, particularly in rural areas, to ensure consistent water supply without reliance on the power grid.


"When we took office, we assessed all the water facilities in the state and found that none of the 58 core water facilities was producing even a liter of water" he stated.


The Commissioner who highlighted the importance of clean water in raising public health standard within the state, said, water treatment facilities would be integrated based on thorough water quality analysis to ensure safe drinking water for the populace.


Mr Monday also announced plans to improve sanitation and hygiene across the state, adding that the state aims to achieve zero open defecation and would construct modern, solar-powered public sanitation facilities, including washrooms and toilets, across the three senatorial zones of the state.


He maintained that soonest the modalities for the program would be rolled out, seeking support from Abians to ensure the project becomes a reality.
