Abia: World Bank Warns Of Housing Crisis in Ohafia Community

The World Bank has expressed worries about the inadequate housing for the increasing population in Ohafia, a town located in Abia State, Nigeria.

At the recent Ohafia Dialogue hosted by the Mben Political Assembly in Amaekpu Ohafia, Dr. Nkem Palmer, a Senior Disaster Risk Management Specialist at the World Bank, stressed the need to urgently tackle the town’s housing crisis.

Palmer emphasized that the rising population in Ohafia, which includes individuals from various backgrounds, is placing significant strain on the town’s existing housing and infrastructure. He noted that this growing demographic challenge requires immediate attention to ensure that adequate living conditions and services are provided to meet the needs of the community.

He mentioned a critical housing shortfall, noting that there are just 21,000 housing units for more than 300,000 residents, which requires urgent action.

Also, Abia Deputy Governor, Ikechukwu Emetu emphasized the necessity for development and reiterated the government’s commitment to enhancing amenities throughout the state. He addressed power disruptions caused by vandalism along the Itu-Ututu-Ihie-Ohafia 33KVA line, commending the recent ban on metal scavenging aimed at reducing infrastructure theft-related crimes.
