AFCONQ 2025: Minister Assures Safety for S' Eagles Following Libya Ordeal

In a statement on Friday, the Honourable Minister of Sports Development, Sen John Owan Enoh reiterated the government’s commitment to addressing the alarming challenges faced by the Super Eagles during their recent international engagement in Libya. The situation, which left players stranded and distressed, has raised significant concerns among fans and officials alike.

The Minister emphasized that the government is determined to safeguard the interests of Nigeria’s athletes, ensuring that such distressing incidents do not happen again. In a statement delivered by Enoh’s spokesperson, Diana Mary Nsan, the Minister made it clear that the welfare and security of the Super Eagles are top priorities.

“We are fully aware of what transpired with our Super Eagles in Libya,” the Minister stated. “I want to assure all Nigerians that we are taking this matter very seriously. The welfare and security of our athletes are paramount, and we will take every necessary step to prevent such occurrences in the future.”

This decisive stance comes after the national team faced severe challenges while overseas, prompting widespread outcry from fans and stakeholders. The ordeal has not only tarnished the reputation of Nigerian sports but has also sparked fears about the safety of athletes during international competitions.

To address these concerns, the government has set up an investigative committee tasked with scrutinizing the circumstances surrounding the incident. Discussions are ongoing with relevant sports authorities and foreign officials to ensure the Super Eagles' safety and comfort during their international outings.

“The Federal Government is committed to the development and success of Nigerian sports,” the Minister continued. “We are working closely with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to guarantee that our athletes are adequately supported. Immediate corrective actions will be taken wherever necessary.”

This proactive approach signals a new chapter for Nigerian sports as the government seeks to foster a safer environment for athletes representing the nation on global stages. The Minister's assurances come as a relief to many who have expressed frustration over the recent mismanagement of the Super Eagles' affairs.
