Nigeria @ 64: CAN Urges Nigerians to be Courageous and Hopeful

Archbishop Daniel Okoh, President of the Christian Association of Nigeria, has called on Nigerians to tap into their inner strength and resilience, remaining hopeful and united in the face of challenges. 


The clergy also emphasized the need for collective progress, encouraging citizens to come together and work towards a brighter future.


 Okoh made the call in a statement on Tuesday, 1 October as the country Marks its 64th independent anniversary.


The Bishop buttressed on the importance of reflecting on the nation’s journey, celebrating achievements, and recommitting to the ideals of peace and harmony.


He noted that Despite the challenges that have tested the Nation's esolve, the people continue to demonstrate resilience and a shared commitment to the common good.


He urged citizens to “embrace peaceful coexistence and work collaboratively to build a future marked by mutual respect and understanding.”


The Archbishop recognized the strides made in combating terrorism and banditry in the country but noted that vigilance is crucial.


He stated, “We commend the efforts of our security forces in safeguarding our nation. However, we must remain vigilant and continue to support initiatives that promote safety and security for all Nigerians.”


While addressing pressing issues such as education and employment, Okoh emphasised that Social justice remains a cornerstone of Nigeria's national aspirations.


 “By prioritising education and creating employment opportunities, we empower our youth and lay the groundwork for a prosperous future.” He added.


“As we celebrate our independence, let us reaffirm our commitment to mutual understanding and mutual respect,” he said, addressing the importance of understanding and placing value on religious diversity.


Okoh urged all Nigerians to be courageous and hopeful, stating, “Together, we can overcome the challenges before us and celebrate the richness of our diverse heritage.”


The CAN president also envisioned a brighter future for the Naton, driven by sustainable growth and focused national development including infrastructure and Youth empowerment. 


“May God guide us towards lasting peace and prosperity,” he added.


As the Nation Commemorates another yearly occasion of independence,  the President, Bola Tinubu in a national broadcast marked Nigeria's 64th Independence anniversary with a promise to eradicate the country's most pressing security threats. 

He noted that his administration is committed to wiping out Boko Haram, banditry, kidnapping for ransom, and all forms of violent extremism within a year.
