The Anambra State Police Command has apprehended two suspects and recovered a bag of gunpowder along with ammunitions at various location points across the state.
The Command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, made this known to the public in a statement on Wednesday, September 25, 2024, explaining that the arrests were made during intelligence-driven patrols conducted by a joint security task force attached to the state police force.
In the statement he said, “The police arrested two suspects and recovered a large quantity of gunpowder concealed in a bag of cassava flakes (garri), along with a locally-made pistol and live ammunition.”
He further explained that on September 22, 2024, operatives patrolling the Pillar-Pole area of Aguata axis intercepted a suspect (name withheld) in possession of three bags of processed cassava popularly known as garri.
After a thorough search of the suspect’s bags, the operatives discovered gunpowder buried beneath the food items.
He also revealed that, after further investigations it was discovered that the suspects were making a headway to a criminal camp.
“Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect was en route to a criminal camp, delivering groceries for consumption and gunpowder intended for the production of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) for the gang,” the police spokesperson said.
“The suspect is currently in custody and is assisting the police in their efforts to apprehend other members of the gang,” he added.
In another development, operatives from the Special Anti-Cultism Squad in the state, acting on credible intelligence, invaded a criminal hideout in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area, in the early hours of Wednesday, September, 25, 2024.
The operation also saw the arrest of one Nelson Wisdom, a native of Etsako East LGA in Edo State, where the police also recovered a locally fabricated pistol and two live rounds of ammunition.
Also speaking, the Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Nnaghe Itam, reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to working with other security agencies to act on credible information, continuing efforts to suppress criminal activities and thwart the plans of criminal elements in the state.
He also assured the public that all suspects would be charged to court upon the completion of investigations carried by the state police command.
