Armed men launched an attack on the Police Rapid Response Squad (RRS) facility at Owerrinta, situated along the Umuahia-Aba Federal Expressway on Monday.
During the raid, a female detainee was tragically shot and killed.
The State Commissioner of Police Danladi Isa confirmed the incident on and revealed that one suspect had been taken into custody.
Providing details of the attack, Isa explained, “In the early hours following midnight, our Owerrinta facility was targeted. The assailants arrived in approximately three Hilux vehicles and began firing on the premises.”
The Police commissioner emphasized that security efforts were underway to track down those involved, with the aim of preventing similar incidents in the future.
He reported that the recent assault on the RRS facility has heightened security concerns in the area. In response, law enforcement has implemented additional patrols and strengthened vigilance at various facilities across the state.
He said that these measures aim to enhance security and prevent similar incidents, reflecting an increased focus on safeguarding vulnerable locations.
He mentioned that the attackers used dynamite to destroy the roof.
The Police boss highlighted that while attempting to free detainees, they fired shots, which tragically resulted in the death of a female suspect.
“Our personnel repelled the attack. However, the assailants used dynamite to blow off our roof. In their attempt to release detainees, they opened fire, resulting in the tragic death of a female suspect.
“Following the incident, we pursued the suspects using technical methods and successfully arrested one individual. The police are currently interrogating him to identify other accomplices. We are making progress”, He added.
According to unconfirmed reports, the female detainee killed in the attack had been held in connection with a child trafficking case.
