Arson: Journalists Caution Against Arrest Of Activist

Media practitioners in Imo State have warned against the rumoured plan to arrest broadcaster and activist, Theodore Chinonso Ubah popularly known as Nonsonkwa for allegedly inciting the razing of the proposed Internally Displaced Persons IDP Camp in Imo State.

The media workers believe his arrest and detention will escalate the already tepid security situation in the state.

A Correspondent of The Punch Newspaper, Chidiebube Okeoma said people would see Ubah's arrest as victimization for simply raising awareness.

A broadcaster with Groove 98.1FM Owerri, Paul Chukwu believes the police should know the implications of Ubah's arrest hence won't attempt putting him out of circulation.

Athan Agbakwuru of the National Pilot Newspaper maintained that arresting Ubah will be diversionary and counterproductive.

Agbakwuru urged the Imo State Government and the police to offer a truthful narrative to the issues surrounding the proposed IDP Camp instead of chasing shadows.

Another broadcaster, Nwakaego Ohaegbu called on the police spokesman in the state ASP Henry Okoye to clear the air on the rumoured plan to arrest Nonsonkwa.

"Any move to arrest Nonsonkwa will spark-off more tension in the state", Sampson Uhuegbu of The Statesman Newspaper said

Jude Owuamanam of The SUN Newspaper said arresting Ubah will be a wrong move by the police.

According to him, any genuine Igbo would be agitated by the report in question.

TVC had reported of plan of the federal government to site at the Study Centre of the National Open University of Nigeria, NOUN at Unuezeoke-Nsu in Ehime Mbano Local Government Area of Imo State a camp for Internally Displaced Persons, Migrants and Asylum Seekers.

The footage used in the report filed by the Imo State Correspondent of the station, Prince Uba gave the impression that the IDPs would include those from Northern region.

The report analysed by Ubah has made many Imolites and Igbo in general become agitated.

They submit that it is a way to move terrorists from the North to Igboland.

The explanation by Senator Frank Ibezim who represented Imo North District and others that the IDPs will be inculcated with skills fell on deaf ears.

In the night of Monday, September 30, some hoodlums set the NOUN Study Centre ablaze.

The home of Senator Ibezim was reported to have been torched too.

Security authorities believe that Ubah's analysis triggered off the arson.

But Ubah insisted that he merely played his role as a broadcaster and cannot be linked to the arson.
