Borno Flood: Dantata Visits Victims, Donates N1.5bn

Alhaji Aminu Dantata, an elder statesman and businessman, contributed N1.5 billion on Tuesday to flood victims in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.

It was learnt that the business Mogul made the donation when he led a delegation from Kano to Government House, Maiduguri, on Tuesday to share their moments of grief.

Dantata’ donation is coming days after his Nephew, The Chief Executive Officer of Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, announced the donation of N2 billion to assist those affected by the recent devastating.

Dangote explained that while the Presidential Committee on Flood and Disaster, which he chairs, has committed 1 billion naira, the Dangote Foundation will donate an additional N1 billion.

Dantata also extended his heartfelt condolences to Governor Babagana Zulum, the government, and the people of the state, especially those who lost their loved ones to the flood.

While lamenting on the degree of deterioration of the economy in the country, Dantata urged the elites and political leaders to repent and fear God.

He prayed for peace and harmony of the Borno State and Nigeria at large.

Zulum responded by thanking the Elder Statesman for his caring visit, which served as a beacon of hope and solidarity amid times of sadness.

“The people of Borno deeply appreciate this show of magnanimity by a 96-year-old to visit us. Let me announce it, Our Baba has donated the sum of N1.5 billion to support the flood victims,” Zulum said.

Similarly, Mohammed Fall, Nigeria's Humanitarian Coordinator, stated on Tuesday that the Nigeria Humanitarian Fund will provide $6 million in aid to flood victims in Borno State.

On Monday, Stephane Dujarric, a UN spokesperson, told a press conference in New York that a joint mission of UN agencies and NGOs, as well as the Nigeria Red Cross Society, visited the main city of Maiduguri over the weekend.

Dujarric stated that they talked with those who had been impacted, many of whom had already been displaced numerous times due to conflict and insecurity in the area.

“We and our partners are providing them with hot meals, we are facilitating air drops of food in hard-to-reach areas cut off by flood waters, and we are also trucking in water.

“We are also providing water and sanitation hygiene services and water purification tablets to stem disease outbreaks.

“This is in addition to supplying hygiene and dignity kits to women and girls, as well as emergency health and shelter services.”
