In a shocking turn of events, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has formally rejected the Edo State Governorship election results announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). At a press conference in Abuja on Monday, Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum declared that the people of Edo State voted overwhelmingly for the PDP's candidate, Dr. Asue Ighodalo, and expect him to be declared the governor-elect.
The election, held on Saturday, September 21. Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressive Congress (APC) was declared the winner by INEC, with 291,667 votes. Asue Ighodalo secured 247,274 votes, while Labour Party candidate Olumide Akpata finished third with 22,763 votes.
However, Damagum alleged that the APC worked in collusion with "the compromised INEC and the AIG of Police in charge of the zone" to manipulate the electoral process. He urged INEC to revisit its decision, citing the Electoral Act's provisions for reviewing the outcome.
The PDP's rejection of the election results comes amid concerns over widespread irregularities and manipulation. The party had previously raised alarms about potential electoral malfeasance, which they claim have now materialized.
