October 1 Protest: Abians Shun Demonstration

Residents of Abia State ignored the #FearlessOctober1 protest scheduled for today (Tuesday), mirroring their response to the #EndBadGovernance protests held in early August.

The state saw no demonstrations or processions from any group, as residents carried on with their daily activities undisturbed. Shops and businesses throughout the metropolis remained open, and traffic flowed smoothly without any interruptions.

In Umuahia, residents engaged in various activities as the city bustled with life. Markets and shops remained open, with vibrant buying and selling taking place. Tricycle operators were seen ferrying people to their destinations, highlighting a sense of normalcy despite the planned protests. Overall, the atmosphere was lively and undisturbed, reflecting the city's focus on daily routines.

Chukwudi, a banker, noted that people chose not to participate because they felt it was unnecessary.

“Previous protests haven’t produced any positive outcomes; instead, they've resulted in arrests and violence against participants. I prioritize my safety, and for me, it's not worth the risk,” he remarked, emphasizing the concern many feel about the consequences of getting involved in demonstrations.

"The threat of potential harm outweighs the desire for change in this current situation", he said.

A trader named Joy, who works along Aba Road, shared that many in the South East are reluctant to join protests due to fears of potential backlash. She noted that past experiences have left people concerned about the consequences of participation, leading to a general sense of caution among the community regarding any demonstrations.

"I’m deeply pained by the suffering my family and I are experiencing, and I know many Nigerian families are in the same situation. Everything, including transportation, has become very expensive. I can't even remember the last time I had a three-course meal. Life is incredibly tough, but these protests seem futile; the government doesn't care and just sends soldiers and police to harm people", she added.

Reports from various local government areas in Abia State indicated a widespread boycott of the protest. Residents and groups chose to carry on with their daily routines, engaging in regular business activities. This collective decision to refrain from participating in the protest underscored a prevailing sense of normalcy, as communities remained focused on their everyday lives rather than the planned demonstrations.

It’s worth noting that during the August 1 #EndBadGovernanceProtest, residents of Nigeria’s South East also avoided the nationwide demonstrations, with many citing similar reasons for their reluctance to participate.
