A 46-year-old Nigerian woman, Amaka Sonnberger, has been arrested by the Toronto Police Service for uttering threats against Nigerians of Yoruba and Benin descent.
In a viral TikTok video, Sonnberger boasted about living in Ontario, Canada, and threatened to poison the food and water of Yoruba and Benin people, leading to their mass killing.
The Toronto Police received reports of the threat on August 28, 2024, and swiftly took action, arresting Sonnberger on September 1, 2024.
She has been charged with uttering threats and is scheduled to appear in court on September 2, 2024.
The investigation is being treated as a suspected hate-motivated offence.
The Nigerian House of Representatives had previously requested that the Canadian government investigate and prosecute Sonnberger over the threat.
The Toronto Police urgie anyone with information to come forward, reminding the public that hate-motivated offences will be thoroughly investigated and prosecuted.
According to the police, the arrest is a indication that hate speech and threats will not be tolerated in Canada.
