CNG Tricycle Operators Told to Shun Smoking, Overloading

The Tricycle Owners and Operators Association of Nigeria (TOOAN), Lagos State Chapter, has initiated an awareness campaign aimed at educating its members about the benefits and potential dangers of using Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) in their operations.

This initiative according to them seeks to help operators adopt safety measures and avoid risks associated with CNG-powered vehicles.

Speaking during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Lagos, Alhaji Azeez Istijabah, the Zonal Chairman of the association, stressed the importance of taking precautions while using CNG-powered tricycles.

According to NAN, the Lagos State chapter of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) recently unveiled 3,000 CNG-powered commercial tricycles worth N10.2 billion as part of efforts to address transportation challenges in the state.

The initiative, launched on October 16, represents a right step towards transitioning to cleaner and more affordable fuel sources.

Istijabah emphasized that while converting petrol-powered tricycles to CNG offers economic benefits, operators must be cautious. “Though there are economic advantages in converting petrol tricycles to gas, precautionary measures are needed to operate effectively,” he said.

He also noted that operators must avoid smoking or operating near open flames due to the highly inflammable nature of CNG.

The union leader in addition warned against overloading, advising that tricycle operators should only carry three passengers at a time and avoid allowing passengers in the front seat. "Overloading is dangerous. Operators need to be careful and follow safety protocols," Istijabah added.

Chairman of the association’s Abule-Egba branch, AbdulAkeem Sabiu, echoed the importance of the initiative, noting that the high cost of petrol has made the cheaper CNG alternative appealing to tricycle operators.

He urged the Federal and Lagos State governments to provide more CNG refilling depots to facilitate easy access for operators.

Sabiu also highlighted the restrictions on tricycle operations in areas like Agidingbi, where CNG refilling stations are located, calling on the government to ease such restrictions to improve access.

Concerns over the safety of CNG-powered vehicles have been raised following recent explosions involving CNG trucks, including incidents in Abeokuta, Port Harcourt, and Benin.

These accidents have led to calls for stricter safety regulations and oversight in the conversion of petrol vehicles to CNG.
