Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has dismissed calls from opposition parties for the cancellation of last Saturday's local government council election, labeling their claims as preposterous and ridiculous.
In an interview with journalists in Asaba, Oborevwori, speaking through his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, denied allegations by the opposition parties that the election was rigged and marred with irregularities, accusing them of being unprepared for the election.
He credited the success of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the poll to the party's laudable programs and projects since 1999 which he noted has uplifted the living standards of the people.
While criticizing the APC and the Labour Party for not only fielding weak candidates, but also failing to campaign, he emphasized that the PDP was the only party to campaign across all units and wards in the state.
He said:"I want to challenge the Labour Party to tell Deltans and Nigerians how many candidates they fielded in the local government election. Beyond that, where did they campaign? You can't stay in your home and expect people to come and vote for you."
He praised Deltans for their overwhelming support for the PDP and for conducting themselves peacefully, and challenged the newly sworn-in Council Chairmen and their deputies to focus on human capital and infrastructural development, in line with the governor's MORE Agenda.
"Let me thank Deltans for coming out enmasse to vote for the PDP and I also thank God for the peaceful conduct of the local government elections throughout Delta State.
"As a government we will remain focused. We won't allow ourselves to be distracted by a few elements in the opposition parties."
