Deputy Speaker Pledges Legislative Reforms for South-East

Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu has pledged to champion legislative reforms aimed at addressing critical issues in the South-East region.


Kalu made this statement on Tuesday after a roundtable discussion with representatives from International Non-Governmental Organizations (INGOs).


The meeting focused on exploring collaborative strategies to address the humanitarian, ecological, and systemic challenges affecting the Southeast region.


Kalu emphasized the importance of collective action and partnership with INGOs to implement effective solutions for the region’s pressing issues.


He said he his committed to tackling both humanitarian and systemic challenges. He emphasized the need for comprehensive measures to improve the region’s situation, promising to use his position to advocate for meaningful changes and development in the area.


He also highlighted that the focus was on creating long-term strategies to improve the region’s challenges through effective partnerships.


During the discussion, he pointed out that key areas requiring intervention have been identified. He stressed the importance of developing sustainable solutions to address these pressing issues, in collaboration with his office and the Peace in South East Project.


He highlighted that the Southeast is facing severe crises, including displacement, violence, and environmental challenges such as natural disasters.


He stated that recent reports indicate that over 260 people have been displaced from their homes due to this complex and ongoing situation, underscoring the urgent need for immediate intervention and sustainable solutions to address these pressing issues.


The Deputy Speaker acknowledged INGO’s efforts in collaborating to find sustainable solutions, restore stability, and bring renewed hope to the people of the Southeast region through their shared commitment to addressing ongoing challenges.


He emphasized that through these partnerships, they can work together to implement sustainable solutions that will restore stability, foster development, and ultimately bring hope to the people of the Southeast.


Kalu, a leading figure in the establishment of the South East Development Commission, expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the representatives of International Non-Governmental Organizations (INGOs) for their invaluable partnership and support.


He commended their dedication and collaborative efforts in addressing the region’s numerous challenges, including humanitarian, ecological, and systemic issues.


He reiterated his commitment to supporting such initiatives in his capacity as Deputy Speaker.
