Abia LG Polls: I'm Impressed With ABSIEC - Abia Deputy Speaker

The Deputy Speaker of the Abia State of Assembly and member representing Umuahia East State Constituency, Rt Hon Austin Meregini, has scored the Abia State Independent Electoral Commission (ABSIEC), high over the smooth conduct of the November 2nd, Local Government election, stating that he is impressed.

In an interview with Newsmen in Umuahia, over the just concluded Local Government in the State, the Deputy Speaker, rated the performance of the electoral commission high, describing the process as near perfection.

According to Meregini, the process fielded the best candidates across the 17 Local Government Areas of the state, stressing that the state has entered a new political terrain, where elections are conducted on a free and fair basis.

“This is a new Abia, we have come to do things differently both for my party and the rest of ndi Abia. some doubted if the election would hold, but here we are, the election has been conducted, with winners issued with the certificates of return and have been sworn in by the Governor, Dr Alex Otti.

Drawing inference from the 2023 gubernatorial election in Abia, where the mandate of the people held sway, the Deputy Speaker said a repeat was recorded during the November 2nd Local Government election.

"What happened In 2023 election repeated it self in the LG election. My party won in all the Senatorial districts during the 2023 election. For the Local Government election, we were not under pressure to produce 17/17. We were ready to accept whatever outcome the election would bring. Whether a landslide victory or not. But we are sure the people will make good choices, bearing in mind the level of developmental strides going on in the State.

"I casted my vote, stood to defend it, I left when the results were being taken to the collation center.

"We are not under pressure like I said before, we were ready to accept the result. The bigger concern is the welfare of the people and the interest of all.

"Am impressed with ABSIEC, giving the 30 days preparation, they did excellently well just few hiccups which was on the delay of the dispatch of materials across Umuahia. But it was understood, because Umuahia usually come last in taking delivery of election materials. Overtly, the process was near perfect",he said.
