The Nenu community in Obingwa LGA, Abia State, is in a state of shock after the sudden death of a local doctor, known as Tony.
Sources say the doctor was poisoned after consuming local gin served by a kinsman, with the tragedy unfolding on Boxing Day
The incident, which has sent ripples of grief through the area, has left residents struggling to come to terms with the loss. Many in the community are especially devastated because Tony had been seen alive and well just the day before, on Christmas Day.
His sudden passing has raised numerous questions, with locals speculating that foul play may have been involved.
A close friend of the deceased, Agbara, shared details of the tragic events.
“This is truly disheartening,” Agbara said.
“He was perfectly fine on the 25th, and by the 26th, he was poisoned through a drink. After consuming the local gin, he began vomiting and tragically passed away soon after.”, he added.
Agbara also revealed that the kinsman who served the drink quickly fled the area with his family, prompting suspicions that he may have been involved in the doctor’s death.
The kinsman’s sudden disappearance has only fueled these suspicions, with many locals now convinced that the drink may have been deliberately poisoned.
However, they have stressed the importance of an autopsy and a formal investigation to conclusively determine the cause of death.
As tensions rise in the community, residents are demanding justice and calling for swift action by authorities to uncover the truth behind the doctor’s sudden demise.
“This is a terrible tragedy, and we need to know what happened,” said a community member. “We want to make sure that the truth comes out, and those responsible are held accountable.”
At the time of filing this report, it was unclear whether the incident had been officially reported to the police.
Efforts to reach Maureen Chinaka, spokesperson for the Abia State Police Command, for comment were unsuccessful.
