Controversial social media personality and crossdresser Idris Okuneye, widely known as Bobrisky, has been re-arrested and is set to face questioning over allegations of bribery and corruption, according to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The arrest took place late Thursday night, with Bobrisky detained at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos while attempting to board an Amsterdam-bound KLM flight en route to London.
Sources report that Bobrisky was detained by immigration officers and prevented from leaving the country, with EFCC officials citing his repeated failure to comply with multiple summons issued by the commission.
His re-arrest comes amid heightened public scrutiny following claims he allegedly made regarding bribing EFCC officials.
In an Instagram post, Bobrisky informed his followers of the arrest, claiming he had sustained injuries during an altercation with immigration officers.
He alleged that the EFCC was directly involved in orchestrating his detention. He wrote “Nigerians help me, EFCC just arrested me. I’m badly injured.”
However, EFCC officials have attributed his detainment to his ongoing refusal to appear before the commission and answer questions related to serious accusations he made.
The controversy traces back to a voice recording shared by social commentator Martins Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, in which Bobrisky reportedly claimed he had bribed EFCC officials with N15 million to dismiss money laundering charges against him.
The EFCC has denied these accusations but has launched an investigation into the matter, forming a committee to address the bribery allegations.
At a press briefing on Thursday, Wilson Uwujaren, the EFCC’s Director of Public Affairs, indicated that if Bobrisky’s allegations were found to be false, the commission would consider pressing new charges for providing false information.
Uwajaren emphasized that fabricating allegations against a government institution is a serious offense, carrying potential legal repercussions.
A high-ranking EFCC source confirmed on Friday that Bobrisky was apprehended in Lagos and will be transported to Abuja for questioning. “He accused us of bribery and corruption; we invited him severally, but he did not show up. He who alleges must be ready to prove. Those allegations are too weighty to allow slide,” the source stated.
Furthermore, it was revealed that Bobrisky had also disregarded a recent National Assembly summons on the matter, adding to the urgency of the arrest.
When reached for comment, Dele Oyewale, Head of Media and Publicity for the EFCC, confirmed the arrest and added, “Bobrisky is on his way to Abuja as we speak.”
The crossdresser’s legal team has yet to respond publicly to the arrest or to the EFCC's statements.
