Police Investigate Edo Food Poisoning After 5 Deaths

Afashio Community in Uzairue, Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo State, have been thrown into mourning as fiive people were reportedly found dead under strange circumstances.

The deceased, identified as four young men and a female , were discovered lifeless in a room, leaving the community in a state of deep sorrow and confusion.

The incident reportedly came to light when family members, concerned after not seeing the individuals emerge from the room for an extended period, decided to check on them.

Upon entry, they were met with the devastating sight of all five victims lying dead. Sources indicate that the victims included two brothers, with the remaining three being close friends, including the young woman.

Residents in the area suggested that food poisoning may be the likely cause, as there were no visible injuries or signs of assault on any of the bodies. “It’s a painful tragedy,” a community source noted. “We suspect it could be food poisoning, but only the autopsy will tell.”

The tragic incident was promptly reported to the Jattu Police Division in Edo State. Authorities have since launched an investigation to ascertain the exact cause of death, with the Edo State Command confirming their involvement in the case.

Edo State Police Command Spokesperson Moses Yamu stated, “The Command is aware. An investigation to determine the cause of death is ongoing.”

In a separate incident, authorities are also grappling with the recent abduction of Rev. Fr. Thomas Oyode, Rector of the Immaculate Conception Minor Seminary of the Catholic Diocese of Auchi, who was seized on Sunday evening during Mass at the seminary in Ivhianokpodi, Aghenebode, in Etsako East Local Government Area.

The Nigeria Police issued a statement on Tuesday, assuring the public of their commitment to rescuing the priest and bringing the perpetrators to justice. “We are doing everything within our power to ensure the safe return of Rev. Fr. Oyode,” an official stated. The incident has provoked an outcry across the region.

In an update, Rev. Fr. Peter Egielewa, the Director of Communications for the Catholic Diocese of Auchi, confirmed that a ransom demand of N200 million had been made by the kidnappers. In a text message, Egielewa briefly responded, “It is true,” confirming the ransom demand.
