Empowering Girls: Foundation Calls For Greater Awareness In Hygiene, Career Dev

In commemoration of the 2024 International Day of the Girl Child, the African Women Mentoring and Inspiring Initiative (AWMII), in collaboration with Donna Stallings Ministries, made a remarkable impact across four communities in Nigeria and Uganda. This year’s theme, "Girls: Vision for the Future," set the stage for a series of empowering outreach activities, beginning with a pre-celebration event on September 13, 2024.

One standout initiative took place at Community Secondary School in Amadi Ama, Rivers State, Nigeria, where over 213 girls received menstrual hygiene products and participated in enriching discussions on vital topics such as hygiene, body care, career development, and the significance of healthy relationships. This early intervention not only addressed immediate needs but also fostered a supportive environment where the girls felt valued and cared for.

The main events unfolded in three locations: Akwete in Abia State, Utu Etim-Ekpo in Akwa Ibom, Nigeria, and Kween District in the Elgon Region of Eastern Uganda. on Monday, 14th October, 2024. Each gathering was meticulously designed to empower young girls by promoting education, mentorship, and health awareness as essential pathways to a brighter future.

Participants engaged in transformative discussions covering critical issues like menstrual hygiene and self-care, instilling a sense of empowerment and confidence. The sessions emphasized resilience and a growth mindset, motivating the girls to aim high and pursue their dreams. Through interactive discussions and hands-on activities, attendees acquired invaluable knowledge and skills to help them navigate challenges with determination.

In total, 823 sanitary pads were distributed, leaving the girls not only better equipped but also deeply motivated. The outpouring of support and care reinforced the message that their well-being and aspirations truly matter. This initiative showcased the power of community and mentorship in shaping the futures of young girls, igniting their potential to become leaders and changemakers.

The Principal of Akwete, Mrs. Success Umuekwe, expressed gratitude for the initiative, emphasizing its positive impact. "I sincerely want to appreciate the efforts of this organization in reaching out to our school. We always look forward to events like this, where our students can gain firsthand knowledge on issues that directly affect them. We're trusting for more collaborations," she said.

Similarly, Chief Ebo Nkwot of Etim Ekpo shared his appreciation, highlighting the urgent need for support in underserved communities.

Dr. (Mrs.) Nissi Ikenna-Amadi, Executive Director of AWMII, acknowledged the vital partnerships with sponsors and school management. "We specifically targeted hard-to-reach schools where children have limited access to urban resources. Our efforts led us to schools in Akwete and Utu-Etim Ekpo, as well as Kween District in Uganda," she explained.

Despite significant challenges in accessing these areas, the initiative was a resounding success. "The smiles of the students were contagious, leaving me with goosebumps. We were able to support 1,089 girls across four communities," she noted.

Dr. Ikenna-Amadi called on the government to prioritize education for all, saying, "Witnessing the deplorable conditions of schools in Nigeria was a wake-up call. It deepens our resolve to urge the government and individuals to support schools in Nigeria and Africa. Together, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of these students."

African Women Mentoring and Inspiring Initiative (AWMII) is a conglomeration of African women from all works of life, who have thrived and are still thriving in their fields and disciplines despite the hurdles faced. AWMII is a group of professionally like-minded women with the mandate of mentoring/coaching women of all ages, especially young women in Career, Entrepreneurship, Leadership and Development. AWMII is saddled with the responsibilities of helping the girl child know her worth via mentorship and periodic training that spurs the mind into creative thinking giving ease to goal attainment.
