Ese Brume Receives AFN Full Support After Devastating Crash

The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting top long jumper Ese Brume as she recovers from a recent car accident in the United States. Brume, a four-time African champion and Olympic bronze medallist, was involved in a near-fatal collision while traveling with a companion, which left both injured but fortunately alive.

Chief Tonobok Okowa, President of the AFN, expressed shock and concern upon hearing about the crash. In his statement on Friday, Okowa conveyed the Federation’s full support to Brume, emphasizing that the athlete’s recovery would be closely monitored. “We stand with you, Ese, during this difficult time,” Okowa said. “We understand how important it is for you to return to the track, and we will provide the necessary resources and encouragement to help you do so.”

Okowa reassured the public that AFN would coordinate with key stakeholders, including the National Sports Commission (NSC), to ensure that Brume’s needs are met during her recovery. He highlighted that Brume’s dedication to athletics and her role as a national and continental icon makes her a priority for the Federation.

“She’s not just an athlete, but an inspiration to many,” Okowa continued. “We will keep her in our prayers and support her in every way possible to ensure she’s back on track soon.”

As part of the AFN’s ongoing efforts to enhance the welfare of Nigerian athletes, the Federation is set to host its Annual Congress in Asaba this weekend. During the event, the welfare packages for athletes across various categories will be discussed, with a focus on providing greater financial and logistical support to elite athletes like Brume.

For Brume, the accident, which occurred on a freeway in the U.S., left her with a whiplash injury and a strained ankle. Despite the painful experience, she expressed gratitude for surviving the crash and remains optimistic about her recovery. “I thank God for sparing my life,” Brume shared in an interview with National newspaper. “Although I’m still recovering from the shock, I am determined to be ready for the 2025 World Championships and other major competitions.”

The accident occurred while Brume and her companion were stranded on a freeway. As they were calling for assistance, an SUV collided with their vehicle, causing significant damage. Brume, who was seated in the passenger’s seat, suffered injuries but avoided more severe harm. “It was a total wreck,” she recalled. “But I’m grateful to be alive and in relatively good health, and I’m looking forward to getting back to training.”

In response to the accident, the NSC has pledged its support, allocating $30,000 to Brume to aid her recovery and training. This sum is part of a larger initiative to support Nigeria’s elite athletes, with the Commission planning to distribute annual grants based on each athlete's performance and potential. “This grant is designed to ensure our athletes have the resources they need to train effectively and compete at the highest levels,” said NSC Director General, Hon. Bukola Olapade.

Olapade emphasized that Brume’s grant would be among the first to be disbursed, acknowledging her significant achievements in athletics. “We’re working closely with various partners to raise funds and support our athletes, and we’re glad to see that our commitment to Brume is helping her through this challenging time,” he said.

Despite the physical setback, Brume’s resolve remains unshaken. She remains determined to continue her journey to the 2025 World Championships, showing a strong spirit that is characteristic of the elite athlete she is. “Once I’m cleared by my doctors, I will get back to my training routine,” she said. “With the support I’m receiving, I’m confident I’ll be back stronger and ready to compete at the highest level once again.”
