Nigeria’s engineering and construction sectors, the Federal Government has commissioned a state-of-the-art Asphalt Testing and Material Characterization Laboratory at the Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute (NBRRI). The ceremony, held on Wednesday in Abuja, also saw the government handing over advanced construction testing equipment to six federal universities, marking a major leap in infrastructure and research development.
At the unveiling event, Chief Uche Nnaji, Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, emphasized the far-reaching impact of the project on education, research, and national development. Nnaji described the initiative as more than just an investment in physical infrastructure but a key driver of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which seeks to empower institutions and promote sustainable innovation.
"This commissioning aligns with the administration’s eight-point agenda, driving job creation and economic growth through knowledge-based solutions," Nnaji declared. He explained that the new facilities would not only tackle Nigeria’s infrastructure challenges but also lay the foundation for more durable and cost-effective development projects.
The minister stressed that the new laboratories would equip universities to nurture future engineers and innovators, ensuring that research leads to practical, homegrown solutions for the country’s infrastructure needs. "By empowering students and researchers, we are building a workforce capable of delivering innovation and industrial growth, crucial for Nigeria's sustainable development," Nnaji added.
In a passionate appeal to beneficiary universities, Nnaji urged them to harness the full potential of the new equipment, not just for academic purposes but to solve real-world problems. "We must transform these resources into solutions that benefit both academia and the nation," he said, calling for action from all stakeholders to ensure the success of the initiative.
Nnaji also recognized the pivotal role played by NBRRI in advancing research capabilities in Nigeria, commending their relentless efforts in making the project a reality. "Today’s achievement would not have been possible without NBRRI’s dedication to expanding Nigeria’s research frontiers," the minister acknowledged.
