Flood: Police Offer Medical Aid to Borno Victims

The Borno State Police Command has held a medical outreach at Mashimami Barracks in Maiduguri as part of its efforts to promote health and protect the safety and well-being of both police officers and community residents affected by the recent floods in Maiduguri and its surrounding areas.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Nahum Daso disclosed in a statement on Monday, 07 October, 2024 that the outreach was part of police-community engagement.

He stated, “The Commissioner of Police in Borno State Command, CP ML Yusufu, in a coordinated effort to promote health and ensure the safety and well-being of police personnel and community members, conducted a medical outreach at Mashimami Barracks, Maiduguri.

“The outreach which is part of police community engagement and also underscores the humanitarian effort of the National POWA Presiden, Dr Elizabeth Egbetokun, who donated relief materials and medications to flood-affected victims in Borno.

“The outreach is estimated to support over 500 residents, including vulnerable community members with the following services, free medical consultations, health screenings (blood pressure, blood glucose, malaria), distribution of medical supplies and relief materials, enlightenment on disaster risk reduction, prevention, and response, yygiene and sanitation education.”

The command, however, emphasized its commitment to preserving public safety, while calling on members of the public, particularly inhabitants of Mashimami Barracks, to take advantage of the medical outreach program and seek free medical care.

Several individuals and organizations in response to the flood disaster in Maiduguri, Borno State, that claimed lives, animals, destroyed plants and displaced many from their homes, made substantial donations to aid victims and support recovery efforts.

The Borno State earlier announced receiving over N12 billion in cash and material donations to aid victims of the Alau Dam flood disaster in Maiduguri.

Abdurrahman Bundi, Governor Babagana Zulum's Senior Special Adviser on New Media, made the announcement during a briefing on the Maiduguri Relief Fund on Thursday.

Bundi disclosed that Aliko Dangote leads the list of individuals, having donated N2 billion. The state also stated that additional donors, such as corporations, state governments, politicians, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), made contributions.

Similarly, the federal government received a $600,000 assistance fund and received contributions from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

The donation was revealed during a meeting between Vice President Kashim Shettima and Dr. Christopher Elias, head of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation's Global Development Programme, on the sidelines of the 79th UN General Assembly in New York.

Severe flooding in Northern Nigeria killed at least 30 people and affected over one million others, according to officials.

The collapse of the Alau dam on the Ngadda River in Borno State due to severe rains led a dam to overflow, resulting in the state's worst flooding since the same dam collapsed 30 years ago, and forcing inhabitants to flee their homes.
