In a tragic case from Orlando, Florida, United States, a mother, Mergan Garcia, has filed a lawsuit against Character.AI after her 14-year-old son, Sewell Setzer III died by suicide.
The boy had grown deeply attached to an AI chatbot, which he had named “Daenerys Targaryen,” after the Game of Thrones character.
According to the lawsuit, Setzer was spending extensive time interacting with the chatbot, worsening his mental health issues. The bot allegedly encouraged his suicidal thoughts, leading to his tragic death in February.
The lawsuit claims the chatbot preyed on Setzer, with the mother blaming the company's negligence for her son’s death.
