FRSC Boosts Road Safety With 950 Officers In Kwara

In a proactive move to ensure safety and smooth traffic flow during the Christmas and New Year period, the Kwara Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has deployed a significant number of personnel across the state. A total of 950 FRSC officers, including 350 special marshals and 120 first responders, are tasked with maintaining order and preventing road accidents during the festive season. The initiative, announced in a press statement on Thursday in Ilorin by the command's Public Relations Officer, Mrs. Olayinka Basambo, highlights the Corps' commitment to ensuring safe travels for all road users.

This year’s security operation, which is set to run from December 15, 2024, to January 15, 2025, will be supported by a fleet of resources designed to cover all major roads in the state. These include 16 patrol vehicles, two power bikes, four ambulances, four private tow trucks, and a 70-tonne tow truck, all of which will be deployed strategically in key locations within Ilorin, the state capital, as well as other major cities. The operation, referred to as "Operation Zero Tolerance for Road Traffic Crashes," aims to safeguard lives and properties, ensuring that travelers can enjoy a stress-free and safe journey.

Commander Mufutau Irekeola of the Kwara FRSC highlighted that the operation is especially crucial given the high volume of vehicular movement during the holiday season. He further emphasized that the safety of all road users is a top priority and expressed the Corps’ commitment to enforcing traffic rules, as well as providing rapid response to any emergencies that may arise.

As part of the Corps' public outreach, Basambo mentioned that the FRSC is engaging in an extensive awareness campaign. This includes mega rallies at interstate motor parks, early morning announcements at local markets, and advocacy efforts at churches and mosques. Additionally, officers will be conducting special patrols to alleviate traffic congestion along busy routes and enforce adherence to road safety regulations.

The Corps is also urging motorists to exercise caution and adhere strictly to traffic laws throughout the season. Drivers are advised against engaging in risky behaviors such as speeding, overtaking in dangerous spots, overloading vehicles, using mobile phones while driving, and operating vehicles with mechanical issues or worn-out tires. Such actions not only endanger the driver but also put others on the road at risk.

Basambo reiterated the importance of maintaining vehicle safety, particularly the condition of tires and other vital components, to avoid accidents. She encouraged drivers to ensure their vehicles are in optimal condition before embarking on long-distance journeys.

The FRSC’s efforts come as part of a broader initiative to reduce road traffic crashes and fatalities during peak travel periods. In conclusion, Commander Irekeola extended warm wishes to the people of Kwara, urging them to celebrate safely. “Only the living can celebrate,” he remarked, stressing the need for caution and care on the roads during this festive season.
