As part of the festivities marking the fifth anniversary of the Prosperity Administration, Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri, alongside his wife, Gloria Diri, attended a highly anticipated novelty football match. The match, which took place at the Samson Siasia Sports Stadium in Yenagoa, saw teams from the executive and legislative arms of the state government compete against each other in a friendly but spirited contest.
The event drew a large crowd, including key figures from the state’s political and administrative circles. Deputy Governor Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, former Deputy Governor Gboribiogha John Jonah, Senator representing Bayelsa Central Konbowei Benson, and Member of the House of Representatives for Ogbia Federal Constituency Metema Obodor, were among the dignitaries in attendance. Supporters, well-wishers, and other top government functionaries also came to witness the rare spectacle.
The match was not just a symbolic gesture of unity and camaraderie among the two branches of government, but also an entertaining competition that ended with the Executive team claiming a 2-0 victory. The highlight of the game was the impressive performance of the Commissioner for Sports, Daniel Igali, who scored both goals for the Executive team. Igali, a former Olympic gold medalist in wrestling, demonstrated his athletic prowess once again, this time on the football field.
The legislative team, which included Oforji Oboku, a member representing the Yenagoa/Kolokuma/Opokuma Federal Constituency, put up a strong fight but was ultimately unable to overcome the well-organized Executive team. Despite the loss, the atmosphere remained festive and lighthearted, as both teams celebrated the spirit of friendly competition and mutual respect.
After the match, Governor Diri took center stage to present the trophy to the victorious Executive team. In his remarks, he praised both sides for their participation and emphasized the importance of teamwork, not only on the field but in governance as well.
