Tragedy has struck the Obada Idi-Emi High School in the Imeko Afon Local Government Area of Ogun State, where a student identified only as Ariyo lost his life after allegedly receiving 164 strokes of the cane from a teacher. The punishment, which has sparked widespread outrage, was reportedly carried out for the seemingly minor offense of breaking a dustbin.
The disturbing incident came to light after activist Adetoun shared the details on Instagram on Friday. According to her, the teacher had brought the dustbin into Ariyo’s class, warning the students to be careful not to break it. In a lighthearted response, Ariyo reportedly joked that the dustbin was bought with the students' money—a remark that allegedly enraged the teacher.
The infuriated teacher then reported the exchange to the principal, who, rather than dismissing the matter, is said to have ordered severe punishment for Ariyo. Acting on the principal's directive, the teacher flogged the student mercilessly, delivering 164 strokes of the cane.
Ariyo collapsed mid-punishment. Eyewitnesses allege that the school staff delayed rushing him to the hospital, and by the time they acted, Ariyo had already died.
The incident quickly ignited tension in the school and surrounding community, with angry residents demanding answers and justice. A senior police officer, speaking under the condition of anonymity, confirmed the incident and revealed that law enforcement had to intervene to prevent the situation from escalating into chaos.
"The situation was tense, but we successfully restored order," the officer said.
Meanwhile, efforts to reach the Ogun State Police Command’s spokesperson for an official statement have been unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
