Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri and his wife, Dr. (Mrs.) Gloria Diri, stole the spotlight at the maiden Engr. Olice D. Kemenanabo STEM Quiz Competition and Award Ceremony, held at the Dappa-Biriye Conference Hall, Golden Tulip Hotel, Onopa, Yenagoa.
The prestigious event, organized in collaboration with the Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN) and the Techiegirl Initiative, took place on Saturday, October 19th 2024 and was themed "Breaking Barriers: The Transformative Impact of Women in Traditionally Male-Dominated Fields."
Addressing the gathering, Governor Diri praised APWEN for their relentless efforts in mentoring young girls to excel in engineering, a field long dominated by men. Diri described the association’s work as pivotal to the state’s educational policies, which prioritize science, technology, and vocational studies.
“You are the torchbearers of Bayelsa’s future, ensuring that young minds, especially girls, rise to become professional engineers and leaders,” the governor declared, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to STEM education and youth empowerment.
Governor Diri also paid glowing tribute to Engr. Olice D. Kemenanabo, recognizing his resilience and dedication to mentoring young talents despite life’s challenges.
“This is the first time Engr. Olice is being celebrated in this remarkable way since the accident. I commend APWEN, Bayelsa chapter, for this well-deserved honor,” Diri remarked, urging Kemenanabo to continue inspiring the next generation of electrical engineers.
The event attracted a star-studded guest list, including key political figures such as Hon. Oboku Oforji, member representing Yenagoa/Kolokuma-Opokuma Federal Constituency. Rt. Hon. Edwin Monday Bubou Obolo, Leader of the State House of Assembly. Dr. Peter Akpe, Chief of Staff, Government House. Mr. Irorodamie Komonibo, Deputy Chief of Staff, Government House.
Traditional rulers and senior citizens were also present, including HRM, King Onya Mozi Agara, the Ibedaowei of Kolokuma Kingdom, and Mr. Gesi Asamaowei, alongside other top government officials.
The "Breaking Barriers" theme resonated deeply with participants, emphasizing the need to empower women in STEM and encourage them to break stereotypes. Governor Diri reiterated his administration’s commitment to gender equality and the creation of opportunities for young women in engineering and technology.
