Gov Mbah Orders Immediate Arrest of Traders' Union Chairman

The Governor of Enugu State, Peter Mbah, has given matching orders for the arrest of those responsible for the killing of the Chairman of Ogbete Main Market Traders Association (OMMATA) Stephen Aniagu, within 48 hours.

In a statement personally signed by Governor Mbah and made available to journalists on Sunday, September 15, 2024, the governor declared that no one under his watch would commit such a heinous crime and go unpunished.

He also used the medium to express his condolences to the bereaved family and the people of OMMATA.

In his words, “My heart grieves over the brutal murder of the Chairman of OMMATA, the late Chief Stephen Aniagu. This is a sad loss, not only to OMMATA as an organisation but also to the entire state.

“In the meantime, I have directed security agencies in the state to apprehend his killers within 48 hours. As we have always maintained, and as every criminal in the state should now realise, we have the capacity to bring them to justice".

Before now, reports gathered shows that Aniagu was killed on Saturday the 14th of September, 2024, in the evening by unidentified gunmen at the suburb of Enugu.

He stated that "We have the will, technology, and resources to pursue, track down, overtake, and defeat such workers of wickedness.

“Therefore, those who committed this atrocity have bitten more than they can chew.

“They have murdered sleep, and so neither they, nor the government, nor the security agencies will rest until all the perpetrators are captured and justice is served, in accordance with the law, sooner rather than later"

He further urged all residents of the state to go about their normal everyday life in business, saying that the safety of lives and property remain a major priority of his government.

“I urge Ndi Enugu to go about their lawful business, as the security of lives and property remain our government’s top priority. Those who have decided to test our resolve will meet their downfall, just like others before them,” Mbah declared.

While commiserating with Chief Aniagu’s family, community, and OMMATA, the Enugu governor commended the late market leader's service to his community before his death, affirming that his killers will never go unpunished.

“The government and people of Enugu State grieve with them. However, I urge them to find solace in the service he rendered to our dear state and in the certainty that his killers will never go unpunished. It is a promise,” the governor said.
