The Arewa Traders Association in Bayelsa State has hailed Governor Douye Diri for the stable peace and security that enables their businesses to thrive. Members of the association expressed their gratitude during a courtesy visit to the Special Adviser on Religious Matters, Reverend Godspower Asingba, at his residence in Yenagoa on Monday.
The traders commended Reverend Asingba’s efforts in addressing the concerns of the Muslim community, including the Arewa Traders, to the governor without bias. According to the chairman of the association, Alhaji Abubakar Kamal, the current administration has shown consistent support, particularly during the Muslim celebrations, providing food, cattle, and monetary gifts. Kamal remarked that in previous years, the traders had to support the Muslim community themselves, but now, Governor Diri’s administration has lifted that burden.
“Since this government came on board, they’ve taken us along in everything. In the past, we didn't receive any government support, but under this administration, both large and small gestures have reached us, our Imam, and the wider Muslim community. During Salah, we used to pool our resources to buy rams, but now, through the S.A’s office and the assistance of Alhaji Yakubu Otobo, Chairman, Bayelsa state Council for Islamic Affairs, the governor includes us in the celebrations,” Kamal stated.
Secretary of the association, Abdulahi Lawal Umar, expressed appreciation for Reverend Asingba’s patronage and continuous support to the traders, also congratulating him on his reappointment as Special Adviser.
In response, Reverend Asingba expressed his gratitude for the visit, urging the Arewa community to continue fostering peaceful coexistence with the Bayelsa indigenes. He thanked Governor Diri for making his role easier by creating an inclusive and supportive environment for all communities in the state.
“I am honored by this visit and appreciate the governor, who has made my work possible. Without His Excellency's support, I wouldn’t be in this role today. Your words of appreciation truly go to the governor, who approved the assistance for your celebrations. The peace you are experiencing here is a reflection of his commitment to a harmonious environment where everyone can conduct their business peacefully,” Reverend Asingba said.
