Group Petitions IGP Over Unlawful Detention Of Widow

A human rights coalition, Onurube has petitioned the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun urging him to deploy his good offices to halt the detention and deprivation of a widow of her right to inherit her late husband's property.

The coalition also urged the IGP to order officers under him to stop being used by some people to traumatize the widow, Perpetua Oparaocha over the land owned by her late husband in Anambra State.

According to the group, Perpetua was on Friday September 13 arrested at her shop at Umunachi Osuama Isiala Mbano Local Government Area by officers later identified to be from the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) of the Imo State Police Command.

The Convener of the coalition, Marjorie Ezihe disclosed that her organization found out that the police officers who effected the widow's arrest acted on the orders of the Abuja Office of the Federal Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) through the Anambra State Police Command.

Ezihe said they noticed a twist in the story when one Dr. Charles Nzeh fronting for one Ezeakabeke, the second defendant in a suit instituted by Perpetua and her in-laws against the forceful takeover of a property owned by her late husband, Clement Nwagbo opted to strike a deal with Perpetua.

She said the deal entailed giving the widow N10 million if she agreed to back out of the suit and renounce the ownership of the land by her husband so Ezeakabeke could have his way.

Onurube disclosed that further findings made by it showed that Ezeakabeke and his cohorts had gone as far as falsifying documents in which they declared the widow dead and presented themselves as executors of the estate of the late Clement Nwagbo.

Ezihe pointed out that the ill-treatment being meted out to Perpetua with the support of the police breaches the relevant sections of the Imo State Violence Against Persons Prohibition Law No 8 of 2021.

According to her, Perpetua's right to inherit her husband 's property has been grossly abused.

She said; Her gestapo style arrest with the full cooperation of the Nigerian police architecture and her continued detention in the Owerri police command headquarters almost 48 hours after in obvious disregard of the law and police regulatory framework of the Police Act is ignoble negligence taken too far in perpetuating criminal act on a vulnerable and marginalized widow ".

Ezihe also disclosed that the late Clement Nwagbo's brother is also languishing in police custody in Anambra State over same matter and has been denied access to his lawyers and family members.

She urged the IGP to help enforce Perpetua and Chukwuka Nwagbo's fundamental human rights by ordering their release from detention.

The Convener further called on the top cop to prioritize the safety and security of Perpetua, her daughter and members of Oparaocha and Nwagbo families.

She equally requested that the IGP helps to bring to justice those in the corridors of power who are fueling the abuse of the widow and members of her family.
