Orji Kalu: My N14m Monthly Senatorial Salary Is Insufficient

Orji Uzor Kalu, the former Governor of Abia State and current Senator representing Abia North, has made a startling revelation about his monthly earnings, claiming that his salary of 14 million naira is insufficient to cover his expenses.

Kalu shared this during an interview on Channels TV's Politics Today, highlighting the challenges he faces in managing his costs.

Kalu contended that most senators effectively support their constituents, emphasizing his commitment to never let his people down. He said he believes in the importance of serving the community and ensuring that their needs are met through dedicated representation.

"I am committed to doing my best as a legislator for my constituency and will never neglect my duties. I believe most senators are fulfilling their responsibilities as well. I will not let Abia North down.

"My monthly earnings of N14 million include my salary, overhead, and staff wages. To be honest, I need to use part of that money to cover fuel for traveling to my constituency, and it's just not enough", he said.

The senator also called for the adoption of a six-year single term for both Presidents and Governors.

"When I was governor, I advocated for a single six-year term. Remember, Obasanjo claimed I was targeting him, which sparked our conflict. I chose a six-year term due to the high costs of elections and economic management. Governors and presidents often focus on re-election rather than the needs of the people. The solution to this issue is to implement a one-term limit of six years", Kalu highlighted.

Kalu, who was also a former Governor of Abia state also declared his eligibility to run for president in 2027, stating he would enter the race if President Bola Tinubu does not seek a second term.

"First and foremost, I want to emphasize that I am qualified and capable of being President. We already have a candidate in our party unless he decides not to run. If the party offers me the chance to represent them, it would be a privilege, not something I can take for granted. My main interest in 2027 is to return to the Senate, serve as a lawmaker, and contribute effectively in that capacity," he stated.
