Guterres Appeals For International Unity to Overcome Crises

United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres on Thursday urged nations worldwide to reinforce their commitment to multilateral cooperation in addressing the pressing challenges facing the global community.

The call was made on the occasion of UN Day, observed on October 24, 2024, marking the anniversary of the organization’s founding in 1945.

In his message, Guterres emphasized the pivotal role the United Nations has played for nearly eight decades as a platform for countries to collaborate on issues related to peace, development, and humanitarian assistance.

He underscored the importance of continuing this tradition of cooperation in the face of today's complex and evolving global challenges.

"The United Nations was built by the world, for the world. Since 1945, it has been the place for countries to unite behind global solutions to global problems," Guterres stated, highlighting the UN's mission of promoting peace, development, and human rights.

The Secretary-General particularly drew attention to the organization's role in addressing key issues such as poverty eradication, sustainable development, conflict resolution, and the fight for gender equality, with a special focus on advancing the rights and opportunities of women and girls. He emphasized that these challenges require coordinated global efforts.

In his address, Guterres also pointed to the increasing need for the United Nations to tackle emerging challenges such as climate change, the rapid evolution of artificial intelligence, the digital revolution, and space exploration.

He referred to significant milestones achieved during the General Assembly in September, including the adoption of the "Pact for the Future," the "Global Digital Compact," and the "Declaration on Future Generations." These agreements, he noted, are essential for ensuring that the UN remains relevant and effective in a rapidly changing world.

"Together, these milestone agreements will help ensure that the United Nations system adapts, reforms, and rejuvenates so it is fit for the changes and challenges around us and delivers solutions for all," he remarked.

While acknowledging the necessity of reforms to modernize the UN, Guterres reaffirmed that the organization’s core mission remains rooted in the principles of the UN Charter and the protection of human rights for all. He stressed that the pursuit of peace, shared prosperity, and a sustainable future requires collective action.

"In today’s troubled world, hope is not enough. Hope requires determined action and multilateral solutions," he said, calling on all countries to unite in concrete, collaborative efforts to create a better future for all.

The Secretary-General urged all nations to continue their support for the ideals and values of the United Nations.
