Ifeanyi Ejiofor Demands Release Of Native Doctor Akwa Okuko

Prominent Human Rights Lawyer Ifeanyi Ejiofor has condemned the arrest and detention of Anambra-based native doctor, Chief Chidozie Nwangwu, popularly known as Akwa Okuko Tiwara Aki.

Ejiofor described the arrest as a violation of fundamental human rights and an abuse of power by the Anambra State Government.

Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s administration recently launched a crackdown on native doctors, citing security concerns and alleged ties to criminal activities. However, Ejiofor insists that Akwa Okuko’s arrest is politically motivated and endangers religious and expressive freedoms in Anambra State.

A viral video on the internet showed Akwa Okuko being taken to the office of Anambra State Deputy Governor Gilbert Onyekachukwu Ibezim, where he was interrogated before being forcibly placed in a police van.

During questioning, Akwa Okuko reportedly stated that he had stopped preparing charms and rituals, known as “Okeite,” after the government’s declaration of war against native doctors.

Ejiofor, in a statement on Sunday, revealed that Akwa Okuko was lured into the meeting under false pretenses and unjustly detained. He argued that detaining someone for their spiritual beliefs violates Sections 38, 39, and 40 of the Nigerian Constitution, which guarantee freedom of thought, religion, and expression.

Ejiofor strongly criticized the government’s actions, stating; “It is deeply concerning that Chief Chidozie Nwangwu, popularly known as Akwa Okuko Tiwara Aki, has been unlawfully arrested by the Anambra State Government. This act not only tramples on his fundamental rights but also raises questions about the abuse of state power for political or personal vendettas.”

He alleged that Akwa Okuko was targeted due to his influence and that the state government was using his arrest to silence certain voices ahead of the 2025 Anambra gubernatorial election.

Ejiofor further explained that Akwa Okuko had discouraged individuals without legitimate means of livelihood from seeking his services, allowing only those engaged in honest business to consult him. If his arrest is linked to a viral video where he mentioned “Okeite,” Ejiofor argues that it is an outright abuse of power.

He also raised concerns about the Agunechemba Security Outfit, a newly established force by the state government. Initially supportive of the outfit, Ejiofor now fears it may be used for political suppression, especially as the 2025 elections approach.

Ejiofor demanded the immediate and unconditional release of Akwa Okuko, warning that his detention could set a dangerous precedent for religious persecution in Nigeria.

“Given these troubling developments, I call on the Anambra State Government to immediately and unconditionally release Chief Chidozie Nwangwu. His detention is not only illegal but also undermines the fundamental freedoms that every Nigerian is entitled to.”

The case has sparked debate among Anambra residents, many of whom question why the government is targeting native doctors while other spiritual practices remain untouched. As tensions rise, the public awaits Governor Soludo’s next move, whether to release Akwa Okuko or continue the crackdown on traditional spiritual figures.
